Holter Monitor
What is it?
A holter monitor is a small portable battery powered device that continuously records the hearts activity such as heart rate and rhythm over a period of time (usually 24-48 hours). The actual monitor is slightly smaller than a standard deck of cards and has 7 electrodes that will attach to your chest. A small pouch holds the monitor itself which can attach to the waistband of your pants, on a belt or on a strap around your neck.

How is the Holter Monitor fitted?
A technician will place the electrodes that sense your heartbeat on your chest. For men, a small amount of hair may be shaved to ensure the electrodes stick. The technician will then connect the electrodes to a recording device with several wires. It is advisable to wear a loose fitting shirt with a higher neckline so that the electrodes can be covered. You will be given a diary to record any symptoms you experience whilst wearing the monitor. Patients should continue with normal daily activities whilst wearing the device. The holter monitor cannot get wet. Therefore you cannot shower, bathe or swim whilst wearing the monitor. Holter monitors are usually unaffected by most electrical appliances except for electric blankets. If you have an electric blanket you can leave it on your bed however do not turn it on. Magnetic underlays and pillows must be removed from your bed as they will interfere with the recording. Holter monitoring is painless and there are no significant risks associated. Patients with sensitive skin may experience skin redness or irritation. It is not possible to receive an electrical shock from the device. |
