Trans-oesophageal Echocardiography
What is it?
A Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE or TOE) is a type of echocardiogram enabling your Cardiologist to get a close look at the heart’s valves and chambers without interference from the ribs or lungs. The test uses a specialised probe containing an ultrasound transducer at its tip which is guided down the patient's throat into the oesophagus.
Why it’s done
A TOE is often used when the results from a standard echocardiogram are not sufficient or when your doctor wants a closer look at your heart. TOE can also be combined with Doppler ultrasound and colour Doppler to evaluate blood flow across the heart’s valves. Indications for a TOE include:
A local anesthetic spray will be applied to the back of the throat. This will numb the back of your throat to make passing the TOE probe more comfortable. Patients also receive a sedative medication in their IV before the procedure to help them relax. If a cardioversion is going to be performed after the TOE, a short general anaesthetic will be given at the time by an Anaesthetist. The heart will be given a short electrical shock (Direct Current Cardioversion or DCCV), via foil electrode pads placed on the skin on the front and back of the chest, which resets the hearts rhythm. |
Preparation for the test
Prior to the test you will need to fast for 6 hours. If TOE is followed by a cardioversion you will need to have a test for blood thinning level (INR) if you are on warfarin. You need to discuss with your Cardiologist if you are on newer generation blood thinners (NOAC’s) before cardioversion. You are not permitted to drive after the test therefore you will need to arrange someone to drive you home. |
